Austen’s
style of writing is a little bit difficult to me. There are a lot of words I didn’t
know before – I don’t want to complain, that was the reason, why I chose this
book. But there were also a lot of words, I knew before, but were used in this
book with a completely other meaning than I knew them. For instance, was there the
sentences “At five o’clock the two ladies retired
to dress, and at half past six Elizabeth was summoned to dinner.” First I was completely
confused about the “retired” in this coherence. Because I knew this word as the
word for the moment, when you are getting old and end up working. So, then you
get retired. But after I looked the word up again, I understood: it’s the word
for pull back oneself. Now I think, it’s a nice word for the moment, when you
are getting old and end up working. You pull yourself back, out of the
stressful working day and you are able to do what you want. You just retire
yourself and enjoy your twilight years.

Interesting. Yes, you can definitely learn a lot of new, elegant vocabulary from this book. One thing: "to end up doing something" means "letztendlich etwas tun". So the opposite of what you're trying to say. You mean "to stop working".
