Analysis -  Are there any words you are unsure of their meaning? Which were my difficulties with Jane Austen’s style of writing. Austen’s style of writing is a little bit difficult to me. There are a lot of words I didn’t know before – I don’t want to complain, that was the reason, why I chose this book. But there were also a lot of words, I knew before, but were used in this book with a completely other meaning than I knew them. For instance, was there the sentences “At five o’clock the two ladies retired to dress, and at half past six Elizabeth was summoned to dinner.” First I was completely confused about the “retired” in this coherence. Because I knew this word as the word for the moment, when you are getting old and end up working. So, then you get retired. But after I looked the word up again, I understood: it’s the word for pull back oneself. Now I think, it’s a nice word for the moment, when you are getting old and end up working. You pull yourself back, out of the...
Reflection - What are you learning personally as a result of reading this text? Which are the differences in society between now and then? Well, it’s obvious, women which lived in the ninetieth century didn’t had the same rights like women do have today. As a woman, you are free to do what you want nowadays. You are allowed to go where you want and go by yourself. Further, are you able to inherit the property of your relations. 200 years ago, it was impossible for woman to inherit anything. Everything went to a male relation, even if the daughters and the wife never ever had seen this relation before. So that could had had the effect, that they became poor and destitute on a day-to-day basis. Besides do you in our culture, only marry, if you love someone, not because of rank, money and influence etc. Moreover, aren’t there these strict expectations about the manners, the attitude etc. We still have some expectations in manners but you also are more or less free in wha...
Reflection - What are you learning personally as a result of reading this text? What tells the story about the society of that time? I think, this book tells us how the society of that time was in a realistic way. Well, the book is about some families which lives at the countryside and which are part of the higher society. I think, they are part of the third class but rich nevertheless. None of them have to work. So, even if the families were rich and they all were part of the high society, the all wanted to marry someone which is richer and more influential than themselves. They didn’t marry because of love, they married each other because of money etc. And there were a lot of ideas of how you have to be and to present yourself. A woman should not walk by herself, a woman should always be polite and never be cheeky. The ideas of manners were a lot stricter than they are today. 155 Words
Describing the characters from the book. What do you like/dislike about them? Characterization Mrs. and Mr. Bennet They are a married couple but I think it isn’t a happy marriage, because the are really different and the always contradict each other. Mrs. Bennet seems like a domineering woman, her only aim is it to see her daughters married. Mr. Bennet doesn’t really like his daughters, except Elizabeth. He thinks his other daughters are silly. But he seems like a man who is down-to-earth and he isn’t interested in backbiting other people in contrast to his wife and daughters. Elizabeth Bennet She is the second oldest of the Bennet sisters and sometimes called Lizzy or Eliza. She isn’t like her sisters, she is sometimes daring and not that silly and that’s the reason, why her father likes her best. Jane Bennet She is the oldest sister. She is a blonde and very beautiful woman. Mary Bennet She is the middle Bennet sister. Catherine Bennet She is the fourth B...
